Sudbury police investigate serious downtown assault

Greater Sudbury Police are looking for witnesses and video of an assault that took place late Thursday evening or early Friday morning at the intersection of Cedar and Young streets downtown.

Police responded just after midnight. Paramedics were already on the scene, police said in a news release Friday.

"Officers arrived on scene and located a 29-year-old, man who had sustained serious injuries," police said.

The victim was taken to Health Sciences North and remains in stable condition.

"At this time, it is unknown how many individuals were involved in the assault," the release said.

"It is believed that there were witnesses to the assault, however, there were no witnesses on (the) scene when police arrived."

Officers will be canvassing the area for video surveillance footage.
