Sudbury police find 69% bail compliance in recent check

Last week, Greater Sudbury Police Service conducted bail compliance checks and warrant apprehension focused on violent and high-risk offenders.

From Dec. 9 -14, officers checked in on people to ensure they were following court-imposed conditions and sought out suspects wanted on arrest warrants for allegedly breaching bail.

Of the 68 compliance checks, 69 per cent of the people were complying.

"In relation to the individuals found not to be compliant, officers submitted six warrant requests and laid 10 charges," Sudbury police said in a news release Wednesday.

"During the same time period, officers executed 65 arrest warrants where 34 individuals were held for bail through the judicial system. Thirty-two of the arrest warrants executed were bench warrants issued by a Justice of the Peace as the individuals had failed to attend court."

The intention of the initiative is to hold accused offenders accountable and prevent crime, victimization and re-victimization.

"We will continue to allocate resources to ensure strict adherence to court-ordered conditions and the prompt execution of arrest warrants for those breaching judicial orders," police said.

"This proactive approach underscores the importance of accountability in reducing risks to our community."
