SUDBURY -- About 100 people working at DSI Underground Canada in Greater Sudbury have been laid off, the union representing the workers confirmed Thursday.
"Yes, it’s true," said Marcel Charron, president of Mine Mill Local 598/UNIFOR, adding layoff notices were handed out beginning with the morning shift.
About 15 workers will remain on the job in the city for the time being according to Charron.
He said the layoffs aren’t related to the COVID-19 crisis, but are part of DSI’s plans to centralize operations in Sturgeon Falls.
The company makes a range of products for the mining industry, from rock bolts to mine ventilation. It came to Sudbury last October, when DSI acquired 100 per cent ownership of Sudbury-based Mansour Mining Technologies located on Lorne Street.
Charron said when DSI took over Mansour in 2019, "the worry was this might happen."
The union will meet with management Friday to discuss exit packages for the affected workers, he said.
CTV News Northern Ontario contacted DSI management seeking comment Thursday afternoon and will update this story with the response.
