Sudbury driver charged with careless driving causing death in fatal Hwy. 144 crash

Ontario Provincial Police say a 20-year-old from Sudbury has been charged with careless driving causing death and stunt driving after a person in a wheelchair was killed late last month.

The collision took place on Highway 144 in the Dowling area of Onaping Falls on July 30 around 6:30 p.m.

"A motor vehicle struck a pedestrian in a wheelchair, who was transported to the local hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries," the OPP said in a news release Monday.

The victim "succumbed to their injuries on Aug. 3."

Highway 144 was closed in both directions for just under five hours during the investigation.

"A 20-year-old-person, from the City of Greater Sudbury has been charged with careless driving causing death and drive motor vehicle perform stunt/excessive speed," police said.
