Sudbury city workers approve new four-year contract

Update:

Municipal employees with the City of Greater Sudbury have approved a new four-year contract. 

A vote Tuesday, July 16 resulted in 91% approval from the inside unit and 62% from the outside unit.

The previous contract expired in April and the members of CUPE Local 4705, representing over 1,500 employees in nine bargaining units, have been poised to strike since June if an agreement could not be reached.

Now, the deal that was negotiated on July 5 has been officially ratified.

Union President Mike Bellerose says says paramedic job security and an increase in benefits, including enhanced counselling services were included in the new contract.

A tentative deal has been reached between the City of Greater Sudbury and its inside and outside workers. 

CTV News has learned a conciliator was involved in over 25 hours of negotiations with the city and the union, Local 4705, which is represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees. 

More than 15-hundred workers will vote on the tentative agreement July 16^th.
