Snowmobile driver suffers life-altering injuries in New Year's Eve crash
Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a northern snowmobile crash that sent a man to hospital with life-altering injuries on New Year's Eve.
An ambulance from Timmins and police from the James Bay detachment were called to the scene of the collision on Third Street North ion Mattice around 10:30 p.m. Dec. 31, OPP said in a news release Monday.
"The driver was located and transported to local hospital by ambulance," police said.
"The driver remains in medical care, and the investigation is ongoing."
There is no word on what caused the crash, but the traffic incident management enforcement team is helping with the investigation.
"We are examining several factors, including the possibility that alcohol could have been involved. However, we are awaiting further evidence and cannot confirm at this time," Const. Kyler Brouwer told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.
"Preliminary information suggests the snowmobile may have been operated on or alongside the street. The operator was an adult male. Information regarding helmet use is part of the ongoing investigation."
The scene was cleared around noon on New Year's Day.
