Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is investigating a shooting incident that happened overnight.

Police say officers responded to a call involving a firearm in the 300 block of the city's Korah Road just before midnight on July 17. They say multiple shots were fired.

A male victim has been taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At noon on Thursday, July 18, officers and the K-9 unit were seen searching the neighbourhood near the scene. Orange circles of spray paint can be seen at the crime scene, indicating where shell casings were found.

Joanne Viau lives across from the apartment where the incident happened.

"Well, I didn't really see anything, but I heard about four gunfires. I thought it was fireworks, but it didn't really sound like fireworks. I went to my window, it's on the side of the building, and I could hear a man talking, describing the direction that, I'm assuming, the shooter went to. And I heard a woman's voice, but I couldn't make out what she was saying. And within moments, the police showed up and did their thing, and that's about all I heard," said Viau.

Police say this was not a random act of violence and they do not believe there is any threat to the public.
