Sault suspect charged with punching rideshare driver in the face twice

A 24-year-old in Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with attacking a rideshare driver and a police officer.

The incident took place early in the morning of Nov. 22.

"Around 2:45 a.m., 911 communicators received a report of an assault in the area of St. George’s Avenue East and Grand Boulevard," Sault police said in a news release Monday.

"An investigation revealed the accused had ordered a ride from a rideshare service and had damaged the driver’s vehicle and punched them in the face twice. They were arrested. After their arrest, the accused kicked an officer."

Charges include assault, assaulting police and mischief under $5,000.

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 27.
