Sault Ste. Marie shooter assaulted officer in 2019, court documents show
Court records show the Sault Ste. Marie man The Canadian Press has identified as the gunman in the violent intimate partner attack on Monday was found guilty of assaulting a police officer in 2019.
Bobbie Hallaert, 44, was accused of resisting arrest, assaulting a Sault police officer and breaking their glasses during an incident Dec. 14, 2019, court documents obtained by CTV News show.
Multiple sources have identified Hallaert as the man who shot and killed four people – including his three children and a 41-year-old woman -- at two different homes three kilometres apart the evening of Oct. 23.
He also left a 45-year-old woman injured with a gunshot wound.
The bodies of the children -- ages six, seven and 12 -- were found in the second home on Second Line East along with Hallaert, who was found deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It is the same address listed on Hallaert's 2021 probation order.
A plea bargain saw Hallaert plead guilty to assaulting a peace officer, while the other two charges of resisting arrest and mischief were withdrawn on Dec. 23, 2021, court records said.
He received a conditional discharge and 12 months probation.

During his probation, he was not allowed to have any weapons and was ordered to "attend and actively participate in all assessment, counselling or rehabilitative programs as directed by the probation officer and complete them to the satisfaction of the probation officer including, but not limited to alcohol abuse."
Hallaert was also ordered by Justice Melanie Dunn to perform 20 hours of community service as part of his probation.
The Sault Ste. Marie courthouse told CTV News in an email there also appears to be dated charges against him in Barrie.
