SAULT STE. MARIE -- Local banquet halls and barbershops in Sault Ste. Marie are making adjustments, in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Marconi club has already cancelled several of its own committee meetings, and are looking to take another big step for dinning customers.
"We’re helping them out by transitioning our eat-in, dining area, from our buffet, all to our takeout," said Sonny Spina, Marconi Club President.
The club has also suspended bocce ball and some bar service. Meanwhile, Spina says customers are taking it upon themselves to reschedule their own events.
"We know that we’re getting calls from people that are limiting the size of their events and also changing dates of their events," he said. "They’re doing it in order to help our community come together and fight this epidemic."
For smaller, more personal businesses like hair salons, they remain on edge. Several who spoke with CTV News said they’re waiting to hear a response from Algoma Public Health, on what the next steps are.
"We’re still staying in work, but we’re asking people if you are sick, please don’t come," said Gerry Giordano, Hair Stylist. "We don’t want our customers getting sick, nor do we want our staff sick."
Giordano says his business has heavily been affected by the virus so far. March Break is typically busy for him, but he says he’s seen a dramatic decrease in customers.
"It’s scary for people who are working because they won’t have an income," he said. "Something’s gotta happen to get this under control."
Until direction from Algoma Public Health is given, Giordano says he will continue to follow proper protocol, laid out by the health unit, when it comes to sanitizing his store.
