A high-profile report of a blade in Halloween candy in Cochrane, Ont., was false, Ontario Provincial Police said Friday.

The initial report included a picture of a chocolate bar with a razor blade beside it. Police haven't said if that report was intended to mislead or an honest mistake.

"The James Bay Ontario Provincial Police has concluded its investigation into the report of a blade found in a piece of Halloween candy in Cochrane on Halloween night," the OPP said in a news release Friday.

"It has been determined that the initial report was unfounded, and there is no risk to public safety."

While the report turned out not to be true, police said it's still important to be cautious and to "ensure the safety and well-being of our community members, especially our children."
