NORTH BAY – As Remembrance Day inches closer, legion members and veterans want assurance that Canadians will take time to reflect at 11 a.m. on Monday.
"Seeing as how this is the Friday before Remembrance Day, to make the effort to go out to Remembrance Day or pause for two minutes at 11 o'clock on Monday," expressed Matt Plant, Callander Legion Pipe Band.
A new poll put out by Historica Canada suggests more Canadians plan to attend Remembrance Day ceremonies has climbed to 41%, a boost of two per cent over last year's.
"I never really go to them. Maybe I will change my routine this year," said one North Bay resident.
"My grandfather was a soldier. He died 4 or 5 years ago… we're planning on going. We've bringing our nephew who was named after him," said another.
An overwhelming 94% of people polled agree that hearing veterans speak about their experiences is the best way for young people to understand what times were like.
"For everyone, when we reach out in our family we find there are people who serve and who have stories to share with us," says Pauline Rochefort, East Ferris Mayor.
The poll also indicates many Canadians feel it's important to attend these ceremonies while the last Canadian World War II veterans are still alive.
