Rain prompts water safety statement for Sudbury District
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has issued a water safety statement for Sudbury District watersheds due to the forecasted heavy rain.
Issued Friday, the statement is in effect until March 15 and applies to the following waterways:
- French River
- Vermillion River
- Wanapitei River
- Veuve River
“Residents in the Sudbury District, including the municipalities of French River, Markstay Warren, St. Charles, Killarney, City of Greater Sudbury, townships of Nairn-Hyman, Sables Spanish River & Baldwin, Towns of Spanish and Espanola should exercise caution along local waterways,” reads the statement.
The statement was issued in response to the significant rainfall and snowfall forecasted across the region. The heaviest rainfall is expected Saturday for areas including Greater Sudbury towards Temagami.
Water safety statements are used to indicate high flows, melting ice and/or other factors that could be dangerous for area boaters, anglers and swimmers.
The ministry said that flooding is not anticipated at this time.
“The public is advised that special caution should be exercised around rivers, streams and in low-lying areas, as water levels are still above average,” the statement added.
“Please monitor any children or pets under your care around these dangers and supervise their activities.”

MFNR officials said that water levels across northeastern Ontario are increasing with warmer weather and melting snow pack and the expected precipitation levels may further increase.
“The ministry is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions,” the MNRF said.
