More than a billion dollars is being set aside by the province to make sure school boards don't have to lay off teachers.

The Canadian Press has learned that the education minister is set to announce $1.6-billion in attrition protection money so school boards won't have to lay off any teachers.

School boards across the province have been uncertain about how the increase in average class sizes would affect their funding.

Ontario Progressive Conservatives have maintained that "no teacher will lose their job" due to changes.

Education Minister Lisa Thompson has insisted the reduction in teachers will be through attrition and that no jobs will be lost involuntarily.

If not enough teachers retire, school boards can use the attrition protection money to pay the teachers they would otherwise have to lay off.

Various school boards across the province will also receive provincial funding allocations Friday.
