Police have laid charges against a 25-year-old Sudbury man, who admitted to hacking into Laurentian University's computer network this winter.
Wednesday is a day Spencer Brydges says he will never forget
"Well, yesterday I was just on the phone talking to a friend and I had my headphones in, and next thing you know I hear violent knocking on my door and five seconds later it got hit with a battering ram," Brydges said.
Brydges was arrested in his home after police executed a search warrant. They seized computers, a cell phone and data storage devices
The 25-year-old is charged with authorized use of a computer system, mischief to data and breach of probation.
"There are reasonable grounds to believe that these offences have been committed," said Detective Sergeant Blair Ramsay, Greater Sudbury Police Service.
"We do have enough evidence to bring this person to court."
Back in January, Brydges says he was able to gain entry into Laurentian University's data base; where he had access to student files, grades and passwords.
Brydges said he wasn’t being malicious. He actually wanted to help the university, by showing flaws in its security system.
"My goal here was to get in as deep as possible, so I can bring a whole pile of vulnerabilities back to the university," he said.
Brydges reported what he did to the school, and soon after, an investigation was launched, leading to this week's arrest.
He said this has been a lengthy process and he's glad it's moving forward.
"I am glad that police can finally examine my files," Brydges said.
Laurentian University is not commenting on the investigation. An official told CTV the school will 'let the legal process play out'.
Brydges' first court date is set for September 6.
