There was a near head-on collision Sunday evening north of the northern Ontario community of Thessalon.

Police and paramedics responded around 8 p.m. to the rollover on Highway 129 near Wharncliffe.

“Driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries,” Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Monday.

“Police … observed a brown pickup truck in the southbound ditch, along with a small utility trailer and an all-terrain-vehicle.”

Police determined that just before the crash, the pickup was headed north near Melwel Road and entered the southbound lane.

That caused “a southbound vehicle driver to take evasive action to avoid a head-on collision,” the release said.

“The brown pickup truck continued northbound and later entered the southbound ditch.”

Police suspected the driver was impaired and they were arrested and taken to the Thessalon OPP detachment for further testing.

The 50-year-old from Wharncliffe is charged with impaired driving and careless driving.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Aug. 8.
