A year to the day after the fatal stabbing took place in Sault Ste. Marie, 25-year-old Tyler Abbot has been charged with second-degree murder.

Abbot was charged Tuesday for the Aug. 20, 2023, incident in which the victim was stabbed in the lower abdomen and sustained other "serious physical injuries," Sault police said Wednesday.

The attack took place in the area of Queen Street West at James Street.

"An investigation revealed the accused had stabbed the victim, who was known to them, with a knife," police said.

"At this time, there were grounds to charge the accused with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failure to comply with an undertaking."

The suspect eluded arrest, however, and the victim died in hospital Sept. 1, 2023, from complications from the stab wound.

Abbot was arrested Aug. 10 by the Toronto Police Service for an unrelated incident. Sault police detectives arrived at the Toronto South Detention Centre in Etobicoke on Aug. 20 and charged Abbot with second-degree murder.
