Northern Ont. man charged with attempted murder in stabbing
A northern Ontario man is in police custody charged with attempted murder after an argument escalated into a stabbing over the weekend.
Officers in the fly-in community of Webequie First Nation, north of Thunder Bay, were called to an early morning assault Oct. 19, Nishnawbe Aski Police said in a news release.
"An investigation revealed a male and female who were known to each other were on School Road when they became involved in an altercation," police said.
"The altercation became physical and the female was allegedly assaulted by the male accused."
Police said they couldn't elaborate on the nature of the man and woman's relationship.
"The victim sustained serious injuries consistent with a stabbing and was initially treated for those injuries at the community nursing station," police said.
"Due to the severity of her injuries, the victim was transported to Thunder Bay for further evaluation and treatment of those injuries."
As of Sunday, she was still in hospital and the extent of her injuries is unknown.
"I can confirm that the attempt murder investigation has no links to the drug trade," Scott Paradis, a spokesperson for the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email Tuesday morning.
