Northern Ont. hospitals affected by global IT outage

Amid a widespread IT outage that has wreaked havoc around the world Friday morning, two northern Ontario hospitals say they have been affected.

Hospitals in Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, North Bay and Temiskaming are reporting they have been impacted.

Porter flight out of the Sudbury airport to Toronto at 7:15 a.m. was cancelled, but all other departing flights Friday appear to be on time.

The Sault Area Hospital (SAH) told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email it called a 'Code Grey,' which indicates an infrastructure loss, at 3:40 a.m.

"All computer systems including the patient electronic medical record are down. Telephone systems are operational," the Sault hospital said.

"SAH downtime procedures are in effect. Manual procedures may cause delays. Some patient procedures may be rescheduled. Affected patients will be contacted."

It attributed the outage to the current worldwide IT disruption and said it is not a cyber accident.

The Sault hospital IT department is working to restore the computer systems as soon as possible.

"Earlier this morning, our health centre was impacted by the global IT outages. Our systems are now coming back online and we anticipate we will be at full operations by noon today," North Bay Regional Health Centre said on social media just before 8 a.m. Friday.

"Emergency services and patient care are being maintained. Patients could experience some delays, however, no appointments or procedures have been cancelled."

Meanwhile, in Sudbury, Health Sciences North said in an email statement some of its IT systems have been impacted as well, which could mean delays and longer wait times for some services.

"With the global IT outage, HSN is reminding anyone visiting the hospital to please be kind with our staff," the Sudbury hospital said.

"All non-urgent, non-oncology surgical cases for today are being rescheduled. Impacted patients are being notified."

The hospitals continue to provide urgent and emergency care.

The Temiskmaing Hospital said it is being affected by the global outage as well, which it said could result in delays in the emergency department.

CTV News has reached out to Sault Area Hospital and Timmins & District Hospital for comment. Neither have made any mention of any impact.
