OPP stop unlicensed Montreal driver on Hwy. 17 in stolen vehicle with drugs, open liquor

Members of the North Bay detachment of Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a notification from their vehicle’s Automated Licence Plate Reader on Aug. 24 at about 10:30 p.m. while travelling on Highway 17.

“(Police) stopped the subject vehicle on Highway 17 (in) Papineau-Cameron Township,” said police in a news release.

Officers determined that the stopped vehicle was stolen during their investigation.

“Additionally, open liquor, suspected cannabis and oxycodone were located inside,” said police.

As a result of the investigation and search, both the vehicle’s occupants were arrested and the vehicle was towed by police.

The driver, a 33-year-old from Montreal, Que., was charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, drug possession and driving without a licence along with charges for driving with both liquor and cannabis readily available.

The passenger, a 29-year-old man from Newmarket, Ont., was charged with drug possession.

Both accused were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on Sept. 24.

None of the accusations has been proven in court.

“Drive safe,” said police in a related social media post.
