North Bay's warming centre to move again next winter

The chair of the District of Nipissing Social Services Board (DNSSAB) is saying North Bay’s warming centre will need a new location next winter.

DNSSAB chairperson Mark King told CTV News that the current warming centre located on Fraser Street is servicing 70 - 90 people every day but it is too close to a number of local businesses.

According to King, DNSSAB has directed additional funding to The Gathering Place which is overseeing the warming centre’s operations to ensure there is extra security on the street and to set up security cameras at the centre.

City and board officials have confirmed the warming centre will not be moving this season.

Council is working, I can speak to that, working on an alternate situation,” said King.

“I hope by spring that we can solidify something that’s long-term.”

Officials said the warming centre is providing vulnerable people with a warm safe place to stay during the day as well as providing meals.
