North Bay police say an argument escalated to assault and property damage when a man refused to get out of a vehicle after getting a ride.

"On Jan. 4, two victims and the accused in this incident were travelling together in the victims’ car. Upon arrival at a parking lot on Chippewa Street West, North Bay, the accused refused to leave the vehicle," North Bay police said in a news release.

"An argument ensued and, while holding a pair of wire cutters, the accused began assaulting one of the victims by punching and attempting to choke the victim. Once out of the vehicle, the accused began to damage the vehicle."

When officers arrived at the scene, the 33-year-old man was found nearby and arrested.

During a search, approximately 1.5 grams of fentanyl and 7.5 grams of crystal meth were seized.

The suspect is charged with assault, assault with a weapon, two counts of drug possession, mischief and failing to comply with a probation order.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The victims and accused are all known to each other, North Bay police spokesperson David Woolley confirmed to CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email Thursday morning.
