The Ontario government has announced an increase to some municipal allocations in northern Ontario.
Municipalities in the Nipissing District, represented by MPP Vic Fedeli (PC), are set to receive nearly a million dollars in additional support in 2020 from the province.
It's part of the $500 million being distributed among 389 municipalities through the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) next year.
Out of the additional $954,900 going to the Nipissing area, $888,400 of that is going to the City of North Bay, bringing the city's annual funding to over $10.27 million.
"Our government continues to review the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund to ensure it is sustainable and is better focused on Northern and rural municipalities that need funding the most," said Fedeli.
The funding is based on several criteria, one being the number of households.
In 2019, there were 35,102 households in the 11 municipalities within the Nipissing area. Funding for 2020 is being based off an increase of 94 households.
Also in 2019, the average allocation per household within the Nipissing area was $599. That average is being increased to $605 for 2020.
The government is announcing next year’s allocations well in advance of the municipal budget year to give local officials more time to plan. Government officials say this is the earliest it has ever been released.
