Kara Flannigan has been chosen as the Green Party of Ontario candidate for the June 1 by-election in Sault Ste. Marie.

Flannigan is a 30 year resident of the city and she said her priorities include a push towards a renewable energy economy and sustainable jobs for the area.

Flannigan was the Green Party of Canada’s candidate in the 2015 federal election for the riding of Sault Ste. Marie. She received 934 votes.

Flannigan is the fifth candidate to enter the Sault by-election.

So far, the other declared candidates include Debbie Amaroso (Liberal Party), Joe Krmpotich (NDP), Ross Romano (Progressive Conservatives) and Kevin Clarke (The People's Political Party).

The by-election was called after long time MPP David Orazietti re-signed back in December.

At the time, Orazietti said he was leaving politics to spend more time with his family. The former teacher is now an academic dean at Sault College.

The Liberals have held the Sault Ste. Marie riding since 2003. Previously, the city was NDP orange for 18 years. The PCs haven’t captured the Sault since 1981.
