SUDBURY -- Sudbury’s public health agency says 2,886 people received the hepatitis A vaccination in the three weeks following a confirmed case of the infection at a Canadian Superstore.
Public Health Sudbury & Districts says the vaccinations were administered from Dec. 17, 2019 to Jan. 8. Of these doses, 2,226 were given to adults and 660 to people under the age of 18.
A weekend clinic was held on Dec. 21-22 and saw 269 people. Over a second weekend clinic, on Jan. 4-5, a total of 334 individuals were vaccinated.
The first case of hepatitis A was confirmed on Dec. 15, 2019, and on Jan. 2 a second case was confirmed by public health officials in Greater Sudbury.
Both cases involved employees of the deli counter at the Canadian Superstore on Lasalle Boulevard.
The local health unit says it will continue to investigate.
“Public health inspectors and nurses are conducting thorough investigations and follow-up of these hepatitis A cases,” says Public Health Sudbury & Districts in a statement.
For those who qualify for a free hepatitis A vaccination, the health unit is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
