SUDBURY -- It might have seemed like a regular Wednesday, but for more than 230 employees at Extendicare Falconbridge, it started a bit differently than normal.
The Minnow Lake Lions Club has launched a new initiative called Frontline Worker Wednesdays, where they deliver free treats to long-term care homes in Sudbury to show their appreciation.
"Coffee and doughnuts for all the shifts, for all the employees, at all the long-term care homes," said club president Blaine Lachance.
This is the second drop off the club has made so far, and the plan is to give back to every long-term care home in the city before they are done.
"We know how hard the frontline workers are working and that they need some support from the community," Lachance said. "And it's our mandate to serve our community. So we're doing this as appreciation from the Minnow Lake Lions."
With help from the MacKenzie family, who own five Tim Hortons locally, the two organizations are able to give free coffee and doughnuts to all of the staff members. Often the Lions make two trips during the day to make sure that all employees get a chance to enjoy the treats, no matter which shift they are working.
Lachance says it is a great way to give back and stay busy.
"It feels good to be able to support these frontline workers. It's something to do for our members in these trying times right now with COVID-19."
Physical distancing and safety measures are taken into consideration during the drop offs. At Falconbridge, two carts were rolled outside where they were loaded by Lion Club members wearing gloves and masks.
Lachance says last week they dropped coffee and doughnuts off to more than 200 employees at the Wade Hampton House and Finlandia Village.
Next on the list is Chartwell Westmount, Lasalle Residence and Pioneer Manor.
