Local driver charged in fatal Highway 17 crash in Verner
A Verner man, 35, is charged in connection with a fatal crash on Highway 17 last month that killed one and sent another to hospital.
The crash involving two passenger vehicles happened in West Nipissing, west of Verner, around 7 a.m. Aug. 23.
"Both vehicles had a single occupant," Ontario Provincial Police Const. Rob Lewis told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email Tuesday.
In a news release Tuesday morning, a month after the collision, OPP said that one of the drivers involved has been arrested.
The driver is charged with careless driving causing death, failing to properly wear a seatbelt and several weapons offences.
He is also charged with being an occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a prohibited or restricted weapon, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a weapon and possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.

There has been no word from police on what caused the crash that closed the road in both directions for more than 7.5 hours.
"The cause of the crash is evidential and will be disclosed through the courts," Lewis said.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court in North Bay on Oct. 3.
