TIMMINS -- The Little Native Hockey League announces Thursday afternoon that its 2020 tournament is now cancelled due to escalating concerns surrounding COVID-19.
This comes as numerous Indigenous youth hockey teams across northeastern Ontario dropped out of the competition and many First Nations communities called for the tournament's cancellation this year.
The LNHL previously insisted that the climate surrounding the virus at the time was not concerning, as long as attendees adhered to hygiene standards.
"The situation changed drastically overnight and we have no reason to believe it will get better or be any less concerning over the coming days and weeks," read a joint-statement from the LNHL and Nipissing First Nation, which was hosting the tournament this year. "Serious concerns about the health and safety of LNHL participants and families, coupled with the cancellation of other major events, including the remainder of the NBA season, prompted the decision.”
