Layoff notices are now being handed out at the North Bay Regional Health Centre.
In March, the hospital announced between 30 to 40 positions would be eliminated. At the time, the hospital’s CEO said rising costs meant the hospital was in the red and needed to come up with an additional $5 million for its 2017-18 budget.
CUPE Local 139 said the union has received a number of layoff notices this week.
“So far six individuals have been advised that their jobs have been affected,” said Shawn Shank, CUPE Local 139 president.
“There are a few more that need to be advised, so the process can take a few weeks.”
Kim McElroy, manager of communications at the North Bay Regional Health Centre, told CTV that 38 union and non-unionized staff are affected by this round of cuts.
McElroy added 13 layoffs have been avoided through the elimination of vacant positions.
