Laurentian University president's house up for sale

The Laurentian University's president's house is officially on the market in Sudbury and is described in the real estate listing as the city's most historical property.

Located at 179 John Street in the hospital area of Sudbury, it has six bedrooms and six bathrooms and was listed for $899,000 Wednesday.

"A home fit for a star," Didi Martin and Angele Chartrand of Unreserved Brokerage said in the listing on Realtor.ca.

An open house for the two-story, single-family home is scheduled for Feb. 25 from 2-4 p.m.

"From walking into a grand entrance, you will be greeted with a spacious living room, formal dining room," the listing said.

"Four of the six bedrooms have their own bathrooms, big bright windows letting in so much natural light, detached garage, lower level you will find a family room with gas fireplace, laundry area, sauna and potential for a second kitchen."

 

The university's board of governors approved the sale last year saying it was no longer needed. 

 

"As I have come to understand, the house has a long and storied history that dates back nearly 100 years, when its construction was commissioned by Ralph D. Parker, Laurentian University’s first board chair," said a statement from the office of Dr. Sheila Embleton, LU’s interim president, in February 2023.

 

"Since purchasing this house in 1965, the university’s various leaders have hosted thousands of guests and hundreds of important community gatherings. It welcomed world leaders, internationally renowned artists, and many celebrated alumni."
