Honouring Sudbury city councillor Michael Vagnini

In honour of the late city councillor Michael Vagnini, flags at Greater Sudbury facilities are being flown at half-mast.

In addition to representing Ward 2, Vagnini was also a member of the Sudbury police services board, serving multiple terms as both chair and vice-chair.

He also served terms as director of both the Ontario Association of Police Service Boards and the Canadian Association of Police Governance.

“He contributed greatly and he was so proud to be part of that Greater Sudbury police services board,” said current chair Al Sizer.

“He wore this crest with pride and was very, very committed to police services in Sudbury and Ontario.”

The discovery of Vagnini’s body Tuesday on Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation just west of Sudbury was not the news anyone was hoping for.

In a statement, the First Nation said the whole community was praying for his safe return.

“But those hopes came to a tragic conclusion on Feb. 13 when he was found at a seasonal camp on leased land of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek. Gimaa and Council thanks the OPP and GPS for their efforts. We ask that everyone continues to maintain their sensitivity and be mindful of the seven grandfather teachings while the OPP continues their investigation.”

The city said information on arrangements, including details on a public book of condolences, will be available in the coming days.
