SUDBURY -- Greater Sudbury Utilities reminds customers that there will be no disconnections during the COVID-19 pandemic amid a resurfacing of scam calls in the area.

Officials say they have received multiple calls from customers reporting another disconnection scam.

The fraudulent phone calls are claiming that customers' electricity will be disconnected within half an hour if money isn't paid.

Director of Communications for Greater Sudbury Utilities Wendy Watson says there will be no disconnections for non-payment while the COVID crisis continues.

"We do still send written notices to overdue accounts, and we encourage people to try to keep their accounts as current as they are able," said Watson. "But we do NOT phone and threaten immediate disconnection."

According to officials, the scammers are sometimes using a toll-free number and sometimes spoofing the GSU phone number.

Watson is urging customers to hang up and call the phone number on their bill to talk with a service provider about their account. She adds customers can also register for "secure 24/7 account access" through the "my account" portal on www.gsuinc.ca and www.sudburyhydro.com.
