In Sault Ste. Marie, the former fire chief Mike Figliola made a court appearance Monday on a series of charges, including fraud, uttering a forced document and breach of trust by a public official.

But based on recommendation from the crown, the judge stayed the charges.

Which means Figliola will not go to trial.

The charges can conceivably be re-visited for a year, but Figliola told the court he had no intention to defraud the city when he filed false expense claims.

He says he paid back the thousand dollars and it was pointed out that having a trial would cost more money than the amount repaid.

Figliola says he's glad to have this matter put behind him.
