The City of Sault Ste. Marie and Fire Chief Mike Figliola have ended their employment relationship, effective Monday.

The city made the announcement on Tuesday. Sources tell CTV Figliola's departure was not a mutual decision.

In a news release sent from Tessa Vecchio, Corporate Communitcations with the City of Sault Ste. Marie indicated that services will continue as usual:

"Recruitment for a new Fire Chief is underway. In the meantime, Deputy Chief Paul Milosevich will serve in the role in an interim capacity while continuing to oversee Fire Education, Prevention and Emergency Management. It is intended that there will be no disruption to the delivery of City services during the transition."

Since 2015, Figliola had been battling the Sault firefighters union for months over his plan to re-classify some jobs as firefighters retired. He was turning those jobs into paramedic jobs, saying that's what the city needed more of.

The city is saying it's a personal matter and can not comment on why the fire chief is no longer employed.
