Fifth grader named mayor of Sault Ste. Marie, just for a day
The City of Sault Ste. Marie will have a new mayor this week – though it will be a very short term. Cassianna Somme, a Grade 5 student from Holy Cross Catholic School, will be the city's Mayor for a Day.
"Cassianna submitted a great, enthusiastic video explaining what she loves about the Sault and how she wants to improve it," said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker.
Cassianna will get a tour of City Hall before opening the council meeting on Monday. Watching from the visitor's gallery will be her parents Chris and Angela along with her sister Adelynn.

As for her platform, Cassianna has a very clear idea of what she wants to see.
"Keep improving the playground equipment at Bellevue Park, I'd promote the Agawa Train Tour and the museum,” she said.
“(Also) keep improving the resources for homeless and mental health."
Cassianna said despite room for improvement, Sault Ste. Marie is the "best city on Earth."
Later in the week, Mayor Shoemaker will visit Cassianna's school and will be treating her class to a pizza party.
