Fatal crash between pickup, train in northern Ontario

The driver of a pickup truck has died following a collision with a train in northern Ontario on Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at the rail crossing on Lillabelle Lake Road in Cochrane around 10:15 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.

The truck driver, a 75-year-old local man, was taken to hospital by ambulance and later pronounced deceased.

Police have closed the road at the rail crossing between McWhirter Road and Concession 6 & 7.

"The closure is expected to remain in effect for an extended period as investigators process the scene," OPP said.

The rail crossing where the crash took place has no lights or stop arm.

"There is the typical railway X sign and stop sign attached," OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email.

It is extremely cold in Cochrane with a high of -18C expected around 4 p.m., but feeling more like -31C with the windchill Tuesday afternoon.
