One person has been charged after a debit card stolen during a break-and-enter in Elliot Lake was used to make several fraudulent purchases.

East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police arrested the suspect Jan. 1. Police believe the 35-year-old used the stolen debit card at numerous retail stores in Elliot Lake.

“On Dec. 30 … a resident on Axmith Avenue returned home to find their house had been broken into and multiple items stolen,” the OPP said in a news release.

“One of those items was a debit card in the homeowner's name ... Investigation revealed that the debit card was fraudulently used at numerous retail locations in Elliot Lake. Video camera footage was obtained from these locations and the person was identified and later arrested.”

Charges include three counts each of fraud under $5,000, use and possession of a stolen credit card and one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on Feb. 8.
