Driver charged after asleep at the wheel complaint
A traffic complaint about a man asleep at the wheel at an intersection has resulted in impaired driving charges being laid against a northern Ontario man.
Police received the call about the incident that allegedly happened on Development Road in Harley Township around 3:15 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release Monday.
Officers found the vehicle on Highway 11 in Temiskaming Shores shortly after and arrested the 21-year-old driver.
The New Liskeard man was taken to the police station for further testing and charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol concentration level of 80 plus.
His driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for a week.
He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 28 in Haileybury.
"The OPP remains committed to keeping Ontario's roads safe. If you suspect impaired driving, call 911," police said.

Hundreds charged during the Holidays
Between Nov. 21 and Jan. 1, Ontario Provincial Police charged 743 people with impaired driving in the province.
"These drivers rang in the new year with the threat of losing their driver's licence for a full year and paying the tough financial penalties associated with this serious criminal code offence, OPP said.
"The OPP would like to thank all citizens who stepped up to help keep roads safe by being a designated driver and having other plans in place to help keep impaired drivers off our roads."
In addition to the charges, police also issued 155 immediate roadside warn range suspensions to drivers stopped during the sobriety checks who registered blood alcohol concentration levels of 0.05 and 0.08.
