Update:
Layoffs of over 100 workers at KGHM's mining operation in the Greater Sudbury community of Levack have now been confirmed by the company.
The layoffs include 87 unionized and 33 non-unionized workers at Morrison Mine, which is going into care and maintenance mode as of March 31st.
Officials with the company confirm that the struggling commodities market is to blame, which they say has put tremendous pressure on resource-based companies locally and around the world.
Mining activities will stop and the mine will stay open with a reduced staff until markets improve.
The United Steelworkers union Local 2020, that represents workers at the mine, reacted to the latest round of layoffs.
"Prices of copper and nickel have been down for quite a while unfortunately. So yeah, the feeling was that it was coming. They've been mining there for many decades and the ore body isn't what it used to be. So, it's unfortunate for sure." said Myles Sullvan, of USW Local 2020.
KGHM's General Manager in Sudbury says the company will be increasing its operations at the McCreedy West Mine and that will open up opportunities for those employees being laid off at the Morrison Mine.

United Steelworkers Local 2020 says that KGHM is cutting 87 more jobs at its Morrison Mine in the Greater Sudbury community of Levack.
The union says the company attributes the cuts to declining commodity prices and size of the ore body.
With these layoffs, the mine will go into care and maintenance mode.
