Update:
The man who died in an industrial accident on Vale property in Sudbury last Thursday is now identified as 59 year old Ronnie Lepage from the Sudbury area community of Wahnapitae.
Lepage was working with the contractor Cechetto and Sons, on a waste disposal job at a Vale tailings area on Thursday. He became trapped under a dump truck.
The Ministry of Labour continues to investigate.
A celebration of Ron Lepage's life is set for Friday afternoon at the Colonial Inn in Coniston.
Original story:
After suffering critical injuries during the disposal of waste material, a Cecchetto and Sons contract employee has died, the Ministry of Labour has confirmed.
The ministry said the worker was pinned underneath the tires of a dump truck, causing fatal injuries. No name has been release.
At this time, no orders have been issued and an investigation is ongoing.
Vale said the incident happened in the central tailings area for the Clean AER project.
“We are very saddened by this tragic event,” said Stuart Harshaw, vice-president of Vale’s Ontario operations, in a media release. “Vale has a long history of working with this local, family-run business and we can appreciate just how difficult this incident has been for the individual’s family, co-workers and friends.”
Vale said it has offered the services of its critical incident stress management team to the contractors that were working in the area and employees who responded to the scene.
Greater Sudbury Police said fire fighters, officers and paramedics were called to the scene at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
This fatality happened three years to the day of another tragic death; Paul Rochette was killed in a smelter incident at Vale's Copper Cliff operations back in April of 2014, when he was struck by a pin that broke off a crusher.
