Canada’s national women’s soccer team beat New Zealand in its second match of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Saturday, June 15 in France.
After a scoreless first half, Canada midfielder Jessie Fleming, 21, of Team Canada scored the first goal of the game early in the second half.
Goal number two for Canada’s women’s soccer team was by forward Nichelle Prince, 24, who got the rebound after Christine Sinclair’s header hit the post.
The game was also the second shutout for goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe, 32, in the 2019 World Cup.
Next, Canada will face the Netherlands on Thursday, June 20 at 12:00 pm to finish the group round of play. The team from the Netherlands has won both of the games they have played against New Zealand and Cameroon. After two games, they have scored a total of four goals, and had one scored against them.
The game will air on CTV.
Sudbury’s Jenna Hellstrom has yet to see any playing time, but she still has lots of support in her hometown. She is one of eight on the team of 23 that has not made an appearance in the tournament yet. Each team is only allowed a maximum of three substitutes during every game.
Hellstrom is an alumni of Sudbury's Carl A. Nesbitt Public School. The elementary school is showing its support of her on its sign.
Meanwhile, the leaders in the other five groups are:
- Group A - France leads this group with two wins, a total of six goals for, and one goal against
- Group B - Germany leads this group with two wins, two GF, and no GA
- Group C - Italy sits at the top after two wins, seven GF, and one GA
- Group D - England leads with two wins, three GF, and one GA
- Group F - United States of America is tied with Sweden with one win each, both shutouts, but USA has 13 GF and Sweden has two
