Building owner in the Sault fined $140K for fire code violations
This week, the owner of a multi-residential building in Sault Ste. Marie was fined $140,000 for multiple offences under Ontario’s Fire Code.
The fines were handed down Nov. 28 and include a victim surcharge. Fire officials have not said where the building is located or whether the fines were imposed after a fire or as a result of an inspection.
Offences include not maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, failing to maintain closures in a fire separation and failing to provide documentation of annual smoke and carbon monoxide alarm tests.
“House fires and carbon monoxide issues often occur at night, and the consequences can turn deadly when there are no working alarms to alert of a problem and provide the much needed time to escape,” Deputy chief Naomi Thibault is quoted as saying in a news release Thursday.

“Such penalties send a clear message that we will not tolerate negligence when it comes to complying with the Ontario Fire Code.”
Annual testing of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms is the responsibility of the owner, fire officials said, and failing to do so can result in substantial fines.
