SUDBURY -- Officials with the Porcupine Health Unit have confirmed the third death related to COVID-19 its service area.
In a statement released Sunday night, health officials say a Timmins man in his 70s has passed away due to the virus.
"It is with great sadness that I report that we have had a third death from COVID-19 in the Porcupine Health Unit region," said Dr. Lianne Catton, medical officer of health for the PHU, in a news release. "On behalf of the PHU, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends."
The man was exposed through contact with another confirmed case and was admitted to hospital after testing positive on April 5. Officials say that his death is not related to an institutional outbreak.
Dr. Catton is urging continued vigilance to the community to continue following all guidelines from public health during this pandemic.
"Continue to stay home as much as possible, avoid non-essential trips and maintain two metres between yourself and others when you do need to leave your home," said Dr. Catton in the statement. "COVID-19 is circulating in our communities and we all play a role in reducing tragic outcomes from this pandemic."
Out of respect for the man's family, no other details will be shared.
