6 active wildfires in northeastern Ont.
As of Saturday evening, there were still six active wildfires in northeastern Ontario with two new fires confirmed late Friday and one confirmed on June 1 in the region.

The largest fire in the region remains North Bay 5 which is currently under control. The fire has been reduced to 106 hectares from 134 at its height and is located three kilometres southeast of Cobalt, Ont. near the east shore of Kerr Lake.
Details of all active fires in the region can be found here:
- Cochrane 8 (COC008) is a 35-hectare fire that is being observed and is located about 57.5 kilometres northwest of Moosonee, Ont.
- Sudbury 12 (SUD012) is a 0.2-hectare fire that was confirmed late evening on May 31. One fire ranger crew is currently committed to the fire which is now considered under control. This fire is located northwest of Windy Lake on the north side of Highway 144 about 4.8 kilometers northwest of Onaping.
- Cochrane 7 (COC007) is a 0.6-hectare fire that is under control, located west of Horseshoe Lake, about 13 kilometres southwest of Iroquois Falls.
- Sudbury 11 (SUD011) is a 3.6-hectare fire with two fire ranger crews currently committed to it that is being held. This fire is located about 1.7 kilometres east of Highway 69 and Rural Route 637 intersection between Lovering and Nakara Lakes.
- Cochrane 6 (COC006) is now 13 hectares after being remapped on June 1. One Ontario fire ranger crew and a coastal ranger are currently assigned to this fire, which is not yet under control. The fire is located 20 kilometres northwest of Fort Severn off the coast of Hudson Bay.
- North Bay 5 (NOR005) is a 106-hectare wildland fire that remains under control.
“Ontario fire rangers are responding to Cochrane 7,” said Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry (MNRF) officials on social media on Friday.
“Please stay clear of the area where crews are working to ensure the safety of the public and of emergency personnel.”

The fire hazard remains high across most of the northeast fire region, according to the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Service.
“(The fire hazard is) extreme for areas between Greater Sudbury, Blind River, Chapleau and Timmins, and around Temiskaming Shores,” said the organization.
“There are a few moderate areas, including the southeast portion of Manitoulin Island and areas south of Huntsville and Haliburton.”
