Timmins police are ramping up their patrols on the highway leading through the city, after the department received lots of complaints about people speeding on Highway 101.

CTV joined an officer while on patrol on Thursday afternoon and it didn't take long to nab a speeder.

A man was caught speeding on Highway 101 between South Porcupine and Timmins.

Constable Darren McGaghran said he was doing 22 kilometres over the posted limit of 70 KM/hour.

He added some drivers are going even faster than that and it's a serious problem.

“We have stopped some motorists who are traveling over 50 kilometres an hour above the speed limit,” said McGaghran, a constable with the Timmins Police Service traffic unit.

“As a result, we've impounded vehicles and suspended drivers licences on the spot for seven days.”

Timmins police said officers patrol this highway nearly every day, but with a recent influx of complaints about speeding, the department has increased enforcement.

“We do get complaints from other drivers on a regular basis and we do take the complaints seriously,” said Kate Cantin, Timmins Police Service communications coordinator.

A ticket for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20 kilometres an hour will cost you $95 and three demerit points.

On Thursday, officers issued eight tickets.

The stretch of highway between South Porcupine and Schumacher is so popular for speeding that police officials told CTV officers issue hundreds of tickets in the area every summer.
