Environment Canada told CTV it can't confirm if a tornado or a funnel cloud went through parts of the northeast on Thursday.

However, an official said the Sudbury Airport reported wind gusts of 100 kilometres an hour.

Meteorologist Peter Kimbell said it's possible a funnel cloud may have touched down but that can not be confirmed.

"The big threat that we were concerned about from the beginning on Thursday was winds and that's exactly what materialized when the thunderstorms came through," said Kimbel.

"At the Sudbury Airport, at 4:45 p.m. or 4:48 p.m. I think it was, they reported a gust of 54 knots which is exactly 100 km per hour, so there was a lot of gusty wind coming down from a loft and when that magnitude of wind hits the surface it can cause some damage."

Emergency crews in Sudbury busy were busy Thursday evening responding to more than 30 incidents of downed power lines and trees that had fallen.

Officials urge people to stay away from any downed lines that remain.
