Heavy rain is looming over much of the north.

Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for Chapleau – Gogama, Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake, Greater Sudbury, Manitoulin - Blind River – Killarney, Nipigon - Marathon - Superior North, Sault Ste. Marie, Superior West and Wawa - White River – Pukaskwa.

“Rain at times heavy will begin Thursday morning and continue into Friday morning. Rainfall amounts of 25 to 40 mm are expected from this event. Thunderstorms are also possible, and any location which receives multiple thunderstorms may receive higher rainfall amounts,” reads an alert posted by Environment Canada.

The expected heavy rain is fueling flooding fears in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Sault Ste. Marie Regional Conservation Authority issued a watershed conditions statement on Thursday.

“Currently, local rivers, creeks and streams are flowing at normal levels. Continued rainfall and thunderstorm will cause levels and flows to rise across the watershed. There may be localized flooding in areas with poor drainage,” reads a statement from the conservation authority.

The conservation authority said flood control channels are flowing at normal levels right now and staff will monitor for any change in water levels.

The statement is in effect until August 21.
