A Sault Ste. Marie physician has been hit with practice restrictions, following sexual assault charges.

In September, Dr. Peter Schwarz was charged with sexual assault offences in relation to a 37-year-old female patient. Her name has not been released.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario have imposed conditions and limitations on the certificate of registration held by Schwarz.

Moving forward, the college orders that Schwarz shall not engage in any professional encounters with female patients of any age, unless the patient encounter takes place in the presence of a monitor who is a female member of a regulated health profession.

A monitor also must remain in the examination room or consultation room at all times during all professional encounters with all female patients, even if another person is accompanying the patient.

Schwarz must ensure each patient scheduled for an appointment with him is directly notified, prior to the appointment, of the restrictions.

Schwarz practices out of the Family Medicine and Drop In Clinic in Sault Ste. Marie’s west end.

In the fall, the Sault Area Hospital and North Shore Health Network suspended Schwarz's privileges.
