Tuesday is World Refugee Day, a day set aside by the United Nations to focus on the world crisis of displaced people.

The Sault Ste. Marie refugee community came out in full force to help those in need at the Soup Kitchen Community Centre.

“We have to help them back,” said Zahra Allouz, a former refugee

“They welcomed us here and they are wonderful with us and friendly people and we have to be the same way with them.”

One long-time volunteer calls it one of the most interesting experiences during her time at the soup kitchen. She said the new Canadians are welcome back anytime.

“I've really enjoyed this day with these people,” said Rolly Powley, a soup kitchen volunteer.

“They're fantastic people, they're hard workers, and they’re willing to help. Everything was there, they were forever asking ‘can I help you do this,’ or do that."

One of the event organizers told CTV one man had to be asked to leave after making some disparaging remarks.

But several young people said that has not been their experience in the Sault.

They said they are happy and feel welcome in the community.

That's the same message Refugee 705 volunteers are hearing as well.

"As far as how the newcomers are experiencing their new life here, it's hard for me to say. I'm coming from a privileged standpoint, I’m sure I don't know everything that happens, but just from talking with them it seems for the most part it's been overwhelming support showed to them by the community,” said Meaghan Douglas, a Refugee 705 volunteer.

About 30 refugees repaid the support shown to them by serving hot meals to those in need.
