Record high temperatures have led to weather warnings throughout the north.

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the following areas:

  • Chapleau - Gogama
  • Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake
  • Greater Sudbury
  • Kirkland Lake - New Liskeard - Temagami
  • Manitoulin - Blind River - Killarney
  • North Bay - West Nipissing
  • Sault Ste. Marie - Superior East

"Temperatures and humidity are expected to increase this weekend under mostly sunny skies," reads a weather alert.

"Maximum humidex values are forecast to reach 36 on both Saturday and Sunday, and the unseasonably warm temperatures and humidity may persist into early next week."

The muggy weather is also fueling thunderstorm fears in parts of the north.

Environment Canada has issued an upgraded severe thunderstorm warning for the following areas:

  • Chapleau - Gogama
  • Geraldton - Manitouwadge - Hornepayne
  • Nipigon - Marathon - Superior North
  • Wawa - White River - Pukaskwa
  • Timmins - Cochrane

"At 1:21 p.m. Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain," reads a weather alert.

"The cluster of thunderstorms near Oba and Fire River are tracking eastward at 80 km/h."

A t-storm watch is also in place for:

  • Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake
  • Kirkland Lake - New Liskeard - Temagami
  • Sault Ste. Marie - Superior East

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” reads a weather alert.

“Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year.”

Environment Canada said severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
